into the scribbleverse

An amazing night of multimedia and live performance flowed through a packed house at the Charlotte Street Foundation, highlighting the imaginative world of artist Donald Ross, known popularly as "Scribe."

While most immediately recognize his work stretching across decades of Kansas City buildings and alleyways, his recent efforts are likely the most impactful.  Larger-than-life murals commissioned by Children's Mercy Hospital throughout their campus inspire happiness and offer hope daily in children facing greater challenges than many of us will see in a lifetime.

It is this visual storytelling that is celebrated in the film that was but one part of the audio-visual-lyrical trinity this evening. Produced by Kyle Dykes, "Enter the Scribbleverse" premiered at the Kansas City International Film Festival in March of 2025, after which Dykes and Ross began collaboration with the Charlotte Street Foundation, Prodolab, and Spacesuit Productions to transform the project.

The final product presented this evening captivated the audience with the film, visuals, a live soundtrack from Chromadata, as well as lyrical performances from Ubi and Aaron Alexander, with lighting from our hometown expert on the situation, "Scenario."

Big Rip Brewing Company also offered up a little icing on the cake with a limited-edition beer release featuring the art of Scribe on a Strawberry Blonde Ale called “Tempted,” which proved to be a delicious accompaniment in its own right.

Limited edition posters and books works were also available for attendees, which were gobbled up as quickly as the beers.

We definitely look forward to what is next in the Scribbleverse, and anticipate seeing a general release of this collaboration appear on YouTube very soon!

Donald Ross, known as “Scribe,” has been a fixture in the Kansas City art scene for over 32 years. Renowned for his larger-than-life murals and his 18-year tenure creating artwork for Children’s Mercy Hospital, Scribe uses visual storytelling to foster genuine connection. His work transforms urban spaces into vibrant landscapes of wonder, aiming to spark joy and inspire discovery in every corner of the city.

Kyle Dykes is a Kansas City-based audio engineer and videographer whose deep roots in the local music scene have connected him with some of the city’s most influential voices in hip hop and beyond. His evolving sound has crossed genres and earned placements on major network television. This natural progression into video and film led to the launch of Spacesuit Productions, a creative studio where Kyle merges sight and sound into a unified artistic vision—making him a rare talent capable of crafting both the story and its perfect sonic landscape.

ProdoLAB is a bimonthly experimental platform in partnership with musician/composer Eddie Moore that pairs Kansas City time-based artists, producers, and musicians to collaborate on a new piece for a one-night-only showcase at Charlotte Street. Each performance is followed by a Q&A session with the artists.

Charlotte Street Foundation was established in 1997 by advocate, David Hughes, Jr. as a response to needs articulated by artists within the community for an organization that was a valuable creative, social, and economic resource for artists living in Kansas City.
