Quite randomly, a friend and I headed down to the Plaza Art Fair.  The skies were threatening rain, and even sprinkled a bit on the way there, but avoided soaking us until after we left.

The selections were good, but not much different from my visit last year.  We may have to abstain for a few years in order to get some fresh works in the mix.  That is not to say there were not any, just that most of them were still too familiar.  Below are a few that captured my attention.

32nd world championship cardboard boat races

While visiting the great state of Arkansas, we had the opportunity to check out this event, which had been elusive for several years.  The endurance of some of these hand manufactured boats was quite surprising, and amusing at times. Apparently, the theme of the year was Star Wars, and there were quite a variety of flotation constructions about the landscape of Sandy Beach. All of the contraptions endured the warm waters quite well, and really did not take on any water.  It was quite surprising, considering the construction materials permitted. A few, while water tight, contained a few minor design flaws that caused disintegration under pressure. One almost fell apart at the starting line, and eventually did, prior to the finish line. It was quite a lot of fun though, and a full house on the beach in spite of threatening rain.  We look forward to getting back to it again. view more photos from this event or add your own to the mix

chalk and walk after hours

  We dropped by for a look at progress on various forms of art littering the sidewalks of the City Market this evening.  Chores and other obligations had made it impossible to make it down for the festivities during normal hours, and the same reasons made visiting the next day improbable. The early evening viewing proved perfect for unhindered access to the art in progress. Everyone had  mostly left for the day.  A few lingered, finishing up their goals.  Judging by the number in progress, there did not appear to be quite as many participants as in years before.  What was on display looked good, although not quite on par with some of the displays witnessed in the past.

On a little more than a whim, a friend and I jumped in the car and headed south to Springfield for a one of a kind event featuring Happy Hardcore!  The all night rave-a-thon featured DJ Flippy from Austin, Poximal from Atlanta, White Russian from Boston, Noi from Winston-Salem, Dazee Cutter w/ MC Pibb out of Dallas, Polar from over in St Louis, Ziggy Trix from Fayetteville along with Elekid and Manny from Chicago. With a theme featuring the Power Puff Girls, who could resist; not many from that area, and then some from St Louis and Kansas City.  We didn't make it down until around 10 pm, and the party was already in full swing.  It was a fun-filled night indeed.   view more photos from this event

Betty Kang ~  Crosstown Rebels reach a milestone as they line-up the release of the label’s first artist album with Pier Bucci, an artist considered to be one of the Chilean holy trinity of techno along with Ricardo Villalobos & Luciano. Pier Bucci ‘Familia’ is already being talked about by the great and the good as quite possibly the electronic album of the year with its emotive, South American melodies juxtaposed against the intricate electronic micro-house leanings and minimal techno excursions.
