We dropped in for an afternoon of fun at the annual Polish culture event in the Strawberry Hill area of Kansas City, KS.  After the parade landed at Frank's Place, traditional clothes, dancing to Polka music, beers and sausage were in plentiful supply. This event is very likely one of the few celebrations of solidarity for folks of Polish heritage, and has a very devoted following.

gladfest friday 24

  Various rides and thrills stretched out along N. Holmes this evening for the first night of GladFest 2024.  Below the ferris wheel, surrounding parking lots and a couple of side streets hosted tents full of a random assortment of trinkets, crafts, and of course, politicians.   One can never seem to get away from that latter crowd, though most regulated to a lot more removed from the usual bustle.  Also available for the listening pleasure of everyone, amateur talent played their hearts out on the main stage.   The event picks up again with a parade on Saturday morning and more carnival and crafts through the remainder of the day into the evening, and on into Sunday.  It did not appear much different than previous years, though with a few less folks, and a bit pricier.

32nd world championship cardboard boat races

While visiting the great state of Arkansas, we had the opportunity to check out this event, which had been elusive for several years.  The endurance of some of these hand manufactured boats was quite surprising, and amusing at times. Apparently, the theme of the year was Star Wars, and there were quite a variety of flotation constructions about the landscape of Sandy Beach. All of the contraptions endured the warm waters quite well, and really did not take on any water.  It was quite surprising, considering the construction materials permitted. A few, while water tight, contained a few minor design flaws that caused disintegration under pressure. One almost fell apart at the starting line, and eventually did, prior to the finish line. It was quite a lot of fun though, and a full house on the beach in spite of threatening rain.  We look forward to getting back to it again. view more photos from this event or add your own to the mix

lakeside demolition

  A few friends protested over their not being included in the last outing to a demolition derby.  In reconciliation, we dragged them out to the nearest comparable activity at Lakeside Speedway . Bone Stock Compact, Bone Stock"80"s, and Limited Weld filled the Pay Up Sucker Promotions lineup on this particular evening.  The wrecking crew showed up too, slamming into one another with as much ferocity as they could muster, until the final round. That final round proved to be a test in endurance though. Twenty cars filled the small area, with not much room to get enough force up.  Noting the family car had entered the arena, we cheered her success.  She made a go show of it, lasting until only three remained, including herself.  Unfortunately, she got stuck on another dead beast and lost the opportunity to finish.

doodle dood chat

Stumbling upon a mural-in-progress at one of the most unlikely places in Kansas City, we paused for a moment to talk with the artist about the project.  The painting was going up on the side of some relatively new residential townhouses and featured an interpretation of the Kansas City Chiefs.  The artist was engaged in getting the mural outlined, while his girlfriend supported his efforts lounging in the afternoon sun.   It was really exciting to see this type of work going up in the 'burbs, rather than the usual dilapidated downtown structure.  Reaching out to the artist later, we asked if he would be interested in doing a brief email interview about the project and himself.  Evan Brown, tell us about yourself and background ... story by Nate Baker ~ photos by Shaun Williams ~ Ontario, Canada - This year the World Electronic Music Festival (WEMF) was held at Orangeville Fairgrounds in Orangeville, Ontario, Canada on July 8th, 9th, and 10th. My WEMF experience started late Wednesday evening as I and several other traveling companions decided that driving would be our best option, so we packed up our bags loaded up the truck and were on our way. We arrived in Canada roughly 18 hours later and as the party didn’t start till the next day, we checked into a hotel and caught up on some much needed rest. We woke up early (ha! 10 a.m.) Friday morning and found a local Wal-Mart, picked up some last minute supplies and were off to the fairgrounds. We arrived at the fairgrounds early that afternoon, which gave us plenty of time to get set up and situated. impur phreakz renaissance

Another round of diverse events filled October 2003, with a bit more artistic leanings.  It started off with a stop by a local gallery in the West Bottoms, for a show featuring art work from several local graffiti artists, and after finishing up there it was back to the loft space in the same area for another "I" rehearsal.  They were quite a collaboration.  I have to wonder what became of these guys. I know the girlfriend of one of them ended up out in California, pursing theater, but that is about it. The next day I got up early and headed down the street for a little local festival parade that the kids were appearing in, then it was another late night down at Kabal for some Frisky fun with local legend DJ Pat Nice. Rinse and repeat, for another early morning and a full day out at the Renaissance Festival.  One of the kids was an actor during the season.  It was quite a bit of fun, and we mused over all there was to offer from beginning to end, then down to the Beach
