shifting and scaling

Shifting away from the Zine in 2007, the site went back to simply photographing events, and writing the random story.   It had been a lot of fun, but unsustainable without greater support and funding.  An increasing desire to move on to other things by many involved, specifically by the primary photographers, led to a decrease in photos by the site for this particular year. Only a few events were photographed in January 2007, capturing moments in Lawrence, St Louis and a regular weekly in Kansas City. A small resurgence in February brought a look at fashion show featuring KC's own America's Top Model behind the decks, along with several other events from Dallas, St Louis, and a celebration of the 10th anniversary of Cicada Rhythm out in Lawrence. March was a cascade of photos. St Patrick's Day in Kansas was the usual suspect, among other events that suddenly appeared in the month.   DJ Solaris and TwoHeavy dropped in on Winter Music Conference in late March

backstory update

In case you have not been following along, things have changed a bit.  Writing the backstory was getting a little stale and not really going much of anywhere, just recanting the events of any particular month that was restored.  I put a stop to it.  Eventually, we will get back to that, once I have had a little time to soak in it.   Beginning with the series related to 2005, when an event is restored it will be posted to a couple of the more prominent social channels.  This will offer an opportunity to focus on the photos again. Some of those have already begun to appear on another channel.  Kind of like the raves old days, you have to be looking around for it though.  See if you can find it.   The back story column will return when a few more thoughts are in order, and there is always that random current event that will show up here, so check back.  Otherwise, look for phocas on your favorite social channel for the most up to the minute on the latest of the restorati

The last month of 2004 launched an array of events that only escalated into the following year.  Frisky kicked things off with their residents and the Simply Soul Syndicate, while Wicked Fridays kept pace across town, and Chris provided a look inside the NYC rave scene.  That Saturday, the weekly at Grand Emporium tried to keep pace, but was no match for DJ P at Kabal. Thing started off simple enough with an appearance by DJ Imperial  at Jilly's, and a live set by Swayzak out in Lawrence, while a few friends and I wandered down to The Point with Dave Brock for a special surprise appearance there. He was in town to headline our show the following night, the 3rd anniversary party, along with Xplicit.  Both kept the floor groovin all night long, and made for a solid night of food, fun, and phabulous partying.   Invited down to a Christmas party for  local promotional firm, I dropped by there, before heading over to Kabal for a party by another local rag

With Halloween having been on a Sunday, things pretty much died down for the rest of the first week of November 2004.  The following weekend was somewhat quiet too, with the only significant even being Kazel appearing at Kabal. We dropped back by on Monday to check out chill evening that had apparently been going on for about a month or so.  Who knew?  It was good and prompted us to head out again on Wednesday for another new night at the Grand Emporium. One weekend after another exploded after that.  Frisky held another in the Acid House series, while The Point turned out as always.  Joe head out to St Louis on Saturday for a party at Club Legit, featuring Spree. Meanwhile, I stayed in town for Tortured Soul and later, a party down in at the Uptown, with support from a new photographer, Roxy.  Extending the weekend one more day, another themed event celebrating Scorpio packed the Empire Room. The following Friday, the Crystal Method put on a live DJ set for a mos

Launching into the traditional party month of October 2004, two big names in House music landed in Kansas City on the same night.  I was on my own photographing that evening, but did catch both of the acts.  They were only on opposite sides of downtown after all. The next morning I headed over to a parade in the community, but took the night off.  Joe picked up where I left off, spending his evening in much the same way as I had the previous night, first covering Randall Jones, then hooking up with Jason to cover Kinetic. Monday brought Seraphim Shock to midtown, and a bit of High Contrast downtown.  The weekend offered two opposite ends of the spectrum.  The fire of the second in the post-Burning Man event series went off in rural world of east Kansas while downtown, Kourtney covered Sandra Collins. With two events going on midweek, we wandered the streets briefly for a visit to both.  The Perk is always good for a good chill evening, but a new little gig The Point

Just as the summer was beginning to cool down, events in the area heated up in September 2004.  "I," an up and coming local band kicked off the month, debuting at Davey's on a Thursday.  The following evening we sneaked in a walkabout on First Firday, dropped in on Chakra, making one last stop at a birthday party downtown late into the night. Meanwhile, Miss Monkey was up in Chicago enjoying Moonshine on Friday.  Saturday, she spent a bit of time at BigWig and Smartbar, while we enjoyed Ty Tek and a little Bliss at the Grand Emporium.  Her ultimate goal in all of this took the stage Sunday, with the Chicago House Music Association Launch Party and Softball Tournament. In Kansas City, the same night, a Hip-Hop music event protesting then sitting President Bush, and the month was only getting started. That weekend Mark Farina came to Kansas City with his "Live at OM" Tour, turning Kabal inside out.  A stop in on Chakra kicked off that evening, that

Everything centered on the Kansas City Metro area during August of 2004, excepting one event photographed by a volunteer on the last days of the month and into September. Staring with the late Sunday night soiree at the the Beach Club, a few days later, the Pitch Music Showcase took over Westport for evening.  An array of acts from every genre played through the evening, unique in their own right and all from the KC area. That weekend, we returned to base phocas for the annual BBQ Beatz session, and the next night headed out to the 4 corners area for wild night with bounce houses and sumo wrestlers, with a backdrop of beats, at Digital Playground. Pete Bones at Kabal was the only show covered the following weekend, along with a stop in on the increasingly popular Monday night BLO at the Empire. The second half of August launched into an overflow of events though.  Turning things up a notch, we dropped in on Frisky at Kabal, hit up Chakra, finally settling at T
