double on decks with tactic

Image
Tactic ~ Tactic is the DJ partnership between Ben Fuller and Brent Lippincott aka dj Candlewax. The two came together creatively in late 2002 while both were living in Lawrence, Kansas. Ben was finishing up his journalism degree at KU and Brent had recently returned to the area after completing his degree in music industry management to run the local hip-hop label Datura Records. The two first met as guests on the immensely popular ‘Breakfast For Beatlovers’ on KJHK 90.7 FM, KU’s student run radio station. It was not until Ben invited Brent to play at one of his events in Lawrence that the two realized they had more in common musically than they had previously thought. Between the two of them, they have explored every aspect of the music industry. Whether it is djing, production, event promotion or running a successful independent hip-hop label, Ben and Brent live and breath music to the fullest. Tactic was put on hold for the past year after Brent moved to Seattle in July o

Justin Kleinfeld  ~ New York, NY - Recall Records is pleased to introduce North American audiences to one of Europe’s best kept secrets – singer / songwriter Thomas Dybdahl. Dybdahl’s North American debut One Day You’ll Dance For Me, New York City is released August 1st. Creating a sound reminiscent of the finest points of Jeff Buckley, Sondre Lerche and Bright Eyes, Thomas Dybdahl’s intimate portraits in song are true masterworks. A winner of the Norwegian Grammy Award (“Spellemannprisen”) and Alternative Award (“Alarm”), 25-year old Thomas Dybdahl is one of the most talented singer-/songwriters to emerge from the Norwegian music scene. He has received rave reviews for all three of his gold and platinum selling albums - …That Great October Sound (2002), Stray Dogs (2003) and One Day You’ll Dance For Me, New York City (2004) - and is now ready to reveal his talent to the rest of the music-loving world. His third album in three years, One Day You’ll Dance For Me, New York City, w

too low to miss the remote

Justin Kleinfeld ~ New York - On July 11, The Remote releases their debut album Too Low To Miss. The Remote is comprised of Ashley Casselle (previously recording under the name Ashtrax) and front man Ben Lost who have joined forces to create an incredibly cool electronic band project. With a voice reminiscent of Pete Shelley from the Buzzcocks, the sexually ambivalent looks of a young Bowie and the rock n’ roll presence of a youthful Iggy Pop, The Remote has in Ben Lost a front man for a new generation. This album should be high on your radar. Signed earlier this year to Global Underground’s GUMusic artist label, the band have been playing by the rules of electronic dance but trashing them as they go along: you can only get away with breaking the rules when you know them inside out, and they wrote the book. Ashley Casselle has been a respected international DJ since 1999 and is The Remote’s musical backbone: providing a lush electronic wash of breaks against a synthetic wall of so

hi-fi high lights

Justin Kleinfeld ~ New York, NY – e-Recal, Recall Records’ new digital community is pleased to announce the North American release of Lodger’s Hi-Fi High Lights Down Low. Perfectly embodying e-Recall’s own fun, creative and communal approach to music, Lodger has created a strong buzz with a unique brand of self-promotion and compelling visual imagery. Lodger built a strong, almost mythical cult online following (more than 3 million individual visitors to its Lodger.tv website) thanks to its simple but uniquely effective, self-made animation videos. Although the bands website has attracted millions of visitors from around the world, it offers very little in the way of information on the people behind the music. Without proper publicity photos, and with the animation videos as the only visual representation of the band, there is a huge mystery surrounding Lodger. Just exactly who/what is Lodger? We can tell you that Lodger was founded in 2002 in Helsinki, Finland by singer-songwri

The album went on to sell over 4 million copies to date. As a producer Ferry also made remixes of world famou

Shaun Williams ~ My interest in photography began in 2000 with a trip to London, England. The trip to London was my first venture outside of the United States and I wanted to be certain that as time progressed and my memory faded that I would never forget what I saw and the experiences I had. I purchased a Canon Rebel EOS 2000 SLR film camera to document my journey. That trip to London and the purchase of my first Canon camera sparked an interest in photography that has led me to where I am today as a photographer for phocas.net. Since that time it is always a great pleasure for me when I have the chance to combine two of my favorite things, photography and international travel, and return to my roots as a photographer. A few weeks ago I traveled to India on a business trip but did not miss the opportunity to mix it with pleasure. Armed with the latest Canon Rebel XT Digital SLR I expected to take many pictures. What I didn’t quite expect was the impact of what I saw with my o

Tim Yoder ~ interview with DJ Etain  ~ images courtesy of DJ Etain  ~   Etain is a ten year veteran DJ turned producer as well as a record label owner of Star People Music. She has been featured on XM Satellite’s “The Move”, and other notable internet radio shows, Provocative and Riders of a PlasticGroove. She has headlined many massive events in her career, namely the Heineken Full-Moon party in the Dominican Republic that hosted 7,500 attendees, and a short Russian tour in 2003. Steering clear of the mainstream and familiar, Etain has maintained her status as one of Colorado’s most in-demand DJ’s for almost 7 years. Never one to follow trends, her sound constantly pushes the envelope and enables her to stand out as a uniquely talented DJ and producer. With 10 years of DJ’ing under your belt, have you always been in Denver? I started in Los Angeles, when I used to live there. My roots were in the CA desert rave scene which paved the way for a lot of DJs we know and love! I

july 2006 editor note

It seems that the best events are always in the summer months. Last month was no exception and in July things are only going to heat up. The cover this month is more art work by Chrissy, the official "graphics girl" of phocas.net. She never ceases to amaze me with what she comes up with. The art work is that of the flyer for our upcoming event at The Grand Emporium, featuring Nigel Richards! I have been ecstatic about this event since everything was finally confirmed. Increasing my excitement is the fact that this is only the beginning of regular phocas.net events. With the help of one of the biggest names in dance events, Disco Productions, we will bring you a new level of talent to the club and at other future events, each and every month. We will be bringing you names that you have only seen at huge events, such as the former Chaos Theory series. Of course, this wouldn't be possible without the help of my friend and the GM of The Grand Emporium, pictured
